The English Football Association has announced that it has officially filed 74 charges against Chelsea Football Club related to alleged breaches of regulations concerning dealings with agents and third-party ownership of players, over a period spanning from 2009 to 2022.
The FA clarified in its statement that most of the alleged breaches occurred during the seasons from 2010/2011 to 2015/2016, confirming that the club has until September 19th to respond to the charges.
Decisions regarding these breaches are expected to be made in the coming period, contingent on whether Chelsea provides clear and official responses to refute these violations against the club.
Chelsea facing turmoil over regulatory breaches
According to the Daily Mail newspaper, the club's current owners, who acquired the Blues in May 2022, discovered these violations during the financial due diligence process prior to the completion of the deal. They promptly reported them to the FA, demonstrating full cooperation from their side.
The FA stressed that the potential sanctions are wide-ranging and could include point deductions or transfer bans. However, Chelsea's transparent cooperation, along with the fact that the violations occurred under previous ownership, might make a financial penalty a more likely outcome.
In an official response, Chelsea confirmed that they were the ones who initiated reporting the potential violations to the FA immediately upon discovering them, indicating that the new management has granted regulators full access to the club's files and historical data.
The statement added: “The club has demonstrated unprecedented transparency and we will continue to cooperate with the FA to conclude this matter as quickly as possible.”
Chelsea FC also continues to face a separate investigation by the Premier League concerning other historical financial breaches over past years.
